History of any sector always has a strong impact on subsequent generations if known and studied in its right perspective.
In the Fortis like in any other field of life in medical profession. Also, just as the sun of British Empire was now settling down ruling of all the surgical specialities was by general surgeons only and they were dealing with this speciality as well. For the first time in 1948 ENT speciality was started in Old Civil Hospital which was located at ghee kata, where the present collector office and magistrate court ,civil court are present.
Present B.J. Medical College was where after third year license was issued. In 1948 BJ Medical College was upgraded as beharam jijibhoi Medical College and Hospital condition was very primitive.
There were no tabs or basins in ENT OPD the attendance of patients was not more than 10 patients list was mainly tonsillectomy and rarely bronchoscopy or a mustard operation. Endoscopic inububation was not done in those days. ENT operation theatre was shared with gynecologist and only two days were given to ENT.
Separate ENT o t was given in the year 1966.
All over the world ENT speciality was considered as a minor branch and a step child in comparison with of thermology and other branches of surgical speciality in spite of it dealing with special census like hearing, speech, taste and all fraction which puts human beings at the highest order in the animal kingdom, especially by the acquired function of speech and development of language, a means of communications.
The demand of ENT department were always considered last. Up to 1947 BJ Medical school was located at the old Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad in 1948. BJM medical School was upgraded into BJ Medical College for undergraduate courses in medicine including ENT academics.
The construction of new Civil Hospital continued from 1947 48 to 1953 54 and civil hospital and BJ Medical College were shifted to the new premises in 1954. Late doctor S. S. Balge qualified for general surgery from km Hospital Bombay. But after resident term in ENT started he started practicing ENT from day 1. He was a Pioneer in ENT catering the needs of all ENT patients of entire Gujarat state.
Dr. P. N. Ranade was first one with ENT qualification and joined ENT department in 1955.
Dr. CF Shah was the first postgraduates student in 1960.
In Baroda ENT department was started in SST Hospital in 1963 by Dr. Srinivasan. The students from Jamnagar Medical College and Surat Medical College were coming to Civil Hospital Ahmedabad for postgraduate studies up to 1963.
In 1966 first exam of d.l.o started at Baroda Medical College.
Up to 1965 ENT department Civil Hospital was having emergencies all seven days a week. At that time there was no cancer hospital and all cancer patients. All the oesophagus and bronchus foreign body removal endoscopic biopsis and other procedures and otogenic brain abscess meningitis lateral sinus thrombosis were looked after by 2 ENT residents only. At the same time, all audio grams caloric tests etc were carried out by residents.
In 1966 2nd ENT unit was started and Dr. Balge and Dr. Ranade wereheads of each unit.
In 1963 nhl municipal Medical College was started.
In 1965 ENT department of vs general Hospital was started at Nagari Hospital which was an eye hospital by S. By dr JS Joshi and dr.SS Dutt as assistant.
Dr. Ruby vakil udvadia and Dr. Hansa adenwala whoopted for ENT career in October 1964 and March 1965 respectively for first to lady ENT. Surgeons of ENT. Gujarat state. ENT department at Sharda Ben Hospital was started in March 1979 by Dr. Manseetta ENT department at LG Hospital was started in year 1980 by Dr u. B Shah.
In 1973 first meeting was held at Baroda with a view to form ent Association of Gujarat state.
First, informal meeting was held at Bombay in 1975 and ENT Association was formed in the year 1976.
